Stud Placement

This page describes the rules around stud placement.

Unspliced Walls

Walls up to 16' long are unspliced - built as a single section. For unspliced walls, stud placement starts at the right end of the wall (when viewed from the outside of the shed), except where noted below.

End Walls

  • 2' O.C. framing - first stud at 12 ⅜"
  • 16" O.C. framing - first stud at 20 ⅜"

For BR, DE, FV, GR, LX, SC, SF with 6'6" wall height, one end wall starts on the right and one end wall starts on the left.

Side Walls

Side walls have two different framing orientations: male and female. The difference between these two framings is where the first stud gets placed.

Male framing:

  • 2' O.C. framing - first stud at 23 ⅞"
  • 16" O.C. framing - first stud at 7 ⅞"

Female framing:

  • 2' O.C. framing - first stud at 23 ⅝"
  • 16" O.C. framing - first stud at 15 ⅝"

Wall length is a multiple of 4' (4', 8', 12', 16'), then both side walls use female framing. If the wall length is NOT a multiple of 4' (6', 10', 14'), then one side wall uses female framing and one side wall uses male framing.

Spliced Walls

Walls longer than 16' must be spliced - built from 2 or more sections. Stud placement in spliced walls starts at the splice and propagates outwards in both directions. One side of the splice uses male framing and the other side of the splice uses female framing. While the female framing for spliced walls is identical to the female framing for unspliced walls, the male framing here is different from its unspliced-wall equivalent.

Male framing:

  • 2' O.C. framing - first stud at 23"
  • 16" O.C. framing - first stud at 7"

Female framing:

  • 2' O.C. framing - first stud at 23 ⅝"
  • 16" O.C. framing - first stud at 15 ⅝"
